Worth knowing
Arvor; cover, cost and conditions
Arvor builds GRP fishing boats in France with a closed wheelhouse, between 6 and 8 metres, inboard diesel, high freeboard, designed for the Atlantic coast and the Channel. These are the typical European coastal fishing boats: sturdy, seaworthy, usable all year round. For insurance purposes the diesel engine is an advantage over the outboard: it is permanently installed, not exposed to theft and has a long service life.
With these boats the main source of claims is the drive train: shaft assembly, stern tube, propeller. Grounding in shallow water or a net in the propeller bends the shaft and damages the stuffing box, and then water comes in. Full hull cover covers grounding including consequential damage to the drive and the sinking; limited hull cover covers neither. On a coastal fishing boat with a shaft assembly, full hull cover is therefore the sensible standard.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Does the insurance cover damage to the shaft assembly?
If it results from an incident, grounding, collision, a foreign object in the propeller, full hull cover pays for it including consequential damage. Wear on the stuffing box and bearings is not covered.

Arvor 215 / 250 is a motorboat from Arvor (France), built since 2005, and today changes hands at between €38,000 and €120,000.
Arvor 730 / 810 is a motorboat from Arvor (France), built since 2008, and today changes hands at between €65,000 and €190,000.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
