Worth knowing
Boarncruiser; cover, cost and conditions
Boarncruiser builds steel displacement boats between 11 and 20 metres in Friesland, classic Dutch motor yachts for inland waters, the Ijsselmeer and coastal cruising. Steel is the most durable form of construction in yacht building and the most maintenance-intensive: the hull lasts a lifetime if the corrosion protection is right, and rusts through if it is not.
For insurance purposes the dividing line is clear: corrosion is wear and tear and is not covered, damage caused by an event is. What matters with steel yachts is the regular checking of the hull thickness and of the anodes. On a yacht whose hull has not been measured for ten years, water ingress is not an insured loss but the consequence of neglected maintenance. Have the wall thickness measured every few years and have it documented.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is rust damage to the steel hull covered?
No, corrosion counts as wear and tear. What is covered is damage caused by an event: collision, grounding, storm, fire. Regular wall thickness measurement and anode care are the precondition for the hull staying sound.

Series by Boarncruiser, with value and cover
Boarncruiser 1350 Advantage is a motor yacht from Boarncruiser, built since 2010, and today changes hands at between €290,000 and €520,000.
Boarncruiser 1100 / 1300 Elegance is a motor yacht from Boarncruiser, built since 2000, and today changes hands at between €180,000 and €480,000.
Boarncruiser 1500 / 1700 Riverline is a motor yacht from Boarncruiser, built since 2005, and today changes hands at between €320,000 and €780,000.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
