Crescent Boats; cover, cost and conditions
Crescent built GRP boats in Sweden for angling and leisure use, and the fleet in circulation today consists mainly of used boats from the eighties and nineties. With boats of this age the question of condition matters more than any question of premium: the age of the laminate, moisture in the core, the condition of the through-hull fittings and of the transom.
On older angling boats the transom is the critical point. That is where the outboard sits, where every load takes effect, and where water penetrates the wooden core once the sealing gives way. A soft transom is material fatigue and is not covered; the consequential damage, a motor tearing off, water ingress, is. Check the transom when buying by tapping and applying pressure, any layperson can spot it.
For the policy, with a boat value in the low four figures, the following applies: third-party liability is the product. It costs around forty euros a year and covers the only loss that exceeds the size of the boat. Hull insurance is worthwhile if a newer outboard is fitted, as it is then usually worth more than the boat.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is a soft transom covered?
No, that is material fatigue. The consequential damage, a motor tearing off, water ingress, is covered under full hull cover.
Is hull insurance worthwhile?
If a newer outboard is fitted, yes, as it is then often worth more than the boat. With an old motor, third-party liability is the sensible product.

For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
On a fishing boat the gear is often worth more than expected: sounder, trolling motor and rods are covered as equipment if they are listed.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
