Crownline Boats; cover, cost and conditions
Crownline from Illinois builds bowriders, deck boats and sport cabin boats with the distinctive FAST Tab hull, an integrated trim surface at the transom. It makes the boat run flatter and trim itself, but the surface sits exactly where the first contacts happen when launching and in shallow water. Include it in the value: a damaged trim surface means laminate work on the load-bearing transom, not cosmetics.
Crownline boats are almost without exception trailer boats. Road transport is statistically the second most frequent source of damage after launching: stone chips, straps that have slipped, impact damage from the trailer running on. Our hull insurance covers transport damage with suitable means of transport; the trailer itself belongs in the sum insured with its own value, otherwise it is left uncovered in the event of a claim.
With Crownline, the model designation tells you what you are dealing with: BR is bowrider, SS and LS are sport boats, CCR and CR stand for cuddy cruiser and cruiser with a cabin, SC for sport cruiser. The number gives the length in tenths of an inch, so the 250 CR is a 25-foot cruiser with a cabin. From the CR models onwards the risk profile changes: overnight stays on board, on-board electrics, refrigerator, shore power, and with them cable fires and water damage from on-board systems as the most frequent hull claims at the berth.
On the CR and SC models there is almost always a sterndrive unit. The bellows and the exhaust manifold are wear parts with a fixed replacement interval; a torn bellows lets water run into the engine compartment, and the resulting damage to the engine then counts as a consequence of maintenance, not as a claim. Replace both according to the manufacturer's specification and keep the receipts, because in the event of a claim that is the difference between a discussion and a payment.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
What do the abbreviations BR, CCR and CR stand for?
BR is bowrider, CCR a cuddy cruiser, CR a cruiser with a cabin, SC a sport cruiser. The number gives the length, so the 250 CR is a 25-foot cruiser. For premium and cover, the value, the year of construction and the engine power count.
Is the trailer covered with a Crownline?
If you state its value in the sum insured, yes, and the calculator has its own field for it in the accessories group. Without that entry it is not part of the insured value.

For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
