East German designs (other yards); cover, cost and conditions
On the waters of the Mark Brandenburg and Mecklenburg you still find large numbers of boats that were built before 1990 in East German yards and cooperatives: cabin cruisers, open sports boats, Kielzugvögel and rowing boats. They can be insured like any other boat: it is not the yard that decides on insurability, but the type of boat, value, year of build, output and cruising range. What makes these boats special is the valuation.
For East German designs there is no depreciation table and no catalogue price. The value arises from the state of preservation, the fit-out and the engine installed, and on well-kept boats it is considerably higher than the original price in Mark would suggest. We record an agreed value whenever a valuation report or a comprehensible replacement value is available; on boats that have been in family ownership for decades this is the only sensible way to insure them.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Can I insure an East German boat without papers?
Yes. What matters is a comprehensible statement of value, a valuation report or a documented replacement value. Missing yard papers are no obstacle to insurance.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides. A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
On a rowing boat hull and riggers are delicate; most damage happens launching and recovering.
