Worth knowing
Dehler; cover, cost and conditions
Dehler builds sporty cruising yachts with racing ambitions and belongs to the Hanse Group. The models are designed for speed, with stiffer hulls, larger sail areas and in part carbon rigs. Anyone insuring a Dehler should disclose racing use from the outset, because it determines the cover.
Club races are included from the Basis-Plus tariff onwards. For races with scoring status, for One-Design classes and for regattas with a high rig risk, please state this when taking out the policy. An open declaration costs a surcharge; a concealed one costs the benefit in the event of a claim. Rig and sails are covered under full hull cover, wear and tear is not.
With carbon components a further point arises: they break differently from aluminium, without warning and often with consequential damage to the deck. Have the value and the components reflected in the agreed value and keep your invoices. With a carbon mast it is the documentation that determines the replacement value, not an expert's estimate based on the year of construction.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Are races with my Dehler covered as well?
Club races from Basis-Plus onwards. For races with scoring status and for One-Design classes you state this when taking out the policy, so the cover matches the actual use.
Can a carbon rig be insured?
Yes, under full hull cover. What matters is the agreed value with documentation: carbon components cannot be valued by year of construction, only by replacement value.

As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides. A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
