Worth knowing
Draco; cover, cost and conditions
In Norway, from the seventies into the two thousands, Draco built GRP sports boats and cabin boats between 6 and 9 metres, fast hulls with sterndrives, widely used in Scandinavia. The brand no longer exists, the boats sail on. For owners this means: yard specific parts come from the used market or have to be made to order, while the Volvo Penta drives are still available.
On older sterndrive boats, the bellows between drive and hull is the component that causes damage: it ages, tears and lets water into the engine compartment. A boat that sinks in its berth as a result is a case for full hull cover; limited hull cover does not cover sinking. The bellows is a wear part with a defined replacement interval; anyone who keeps to it prevents the most frequent total loss of this generation of boats.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Does the insurance cover sinking caused by a torn drive bellows?
The sinking itself is covered by full hull cover. The torn bellows as a wear part is not, so keep to the replacement interval; it is the most effective precaution against this total loss.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
