Worth knowing
Hallberg-Rassy; cover, cost and conditions
Hallberg-Rassy, based in Ellös on the Swedish west coast, builds blue water yachts with a firm reputation: solid construction, protected centre cockpits, high value retention. Owners typically sail long distances with them, the North Sea, the Baltic, the Atlantic, often long-distance cruising. That is exactly the point at which standard contracts stop.
For long-distance cruising you need a genuine worldwide cruising range with no time limit, not a holiday cover with an obligation to return. Our blue water cover comes without any restriction in time or geography, permits berths outside Europe and does without hurricane and cyclone exclusion clauses. Anyone crossing the Atlantic or sailing along with the ARC should have this point in writing before departure and not clarify it at the Panama Canal.
Hallberg-Rassy yachts hold their value exceptionally well. That makes the agreed value more important than with other brands: a valuation based on the year of construction does not come close to the market value of a twenty-year-old HR. In the Premium tariff the agreed value is unlimited and can be adjusted at any time; long-distance cruisers are also granted a reduction of the deductibles by 50 percent after long loyalty to the contract.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is single-handed sailing insured with my Hallberg-Rassy?
Yes, single-handed sailing is included, with no surcharge. In our long-distance cruising survey (as at 01.08.2026) one of seven providers excluded it in the basic wording; with us it is part of the blue water cover.
What applies during the hurricane season?
Our blue water cover comes without hurricane and cyclone exclusion clauses and without security requirements for the storm season. That is the point at which long-distance cruising contracts differ.

As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides. A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
