Worth knowing
Hanse Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Hanse Yachts from Greifswald builds sailing yachts from about nine to twenty metres and, after Bavaria, is the second large German series yard. Characteristic is the self-tacking jib, convenient in sailing practice, inconspicuous in insurance terms. Decisive for your contract is the sail area, not the auxiliary engine.
Because Hanse yachts mostly sail in the Baltic Sea and in the Mediterranean, the cruising range is the point that should be clarified before the first trip. From Greifswald to Bornholm is a different sailing area than from Greifswald to Croatia. The extension costs little and does not apply retroactively. For the countries where it is compulsory we automatically provide the international certificate of insurance in the customer account four weeks before it falls due.
With sailing yachts of this size, rig damage is the expensive case, and the question is always the same: wear or event? Rig, mast and sails are covered under full hull cover, wear never is. Anyone who has the standing rigging replaced at the manufacturer's interval and keeps the receipts is in the better position in the event of a claim, it is the most frequent point of dispute with sailing yachts of all.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
How is the premium for a Hanse calculated?
By sail area, value, year of construction and cruising range. With sailing yachts the auxiliary engine plays no significant part for third-party liability.
Is a dismasting insured?
Under full hull cover yes, if an event was the cause, for example a gust or a collision. Material failure through wear is excluded; that is why maintenance receipts for the standing rigging are valuable.

For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides. A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
