Harbeck builds boat trailers in Germany with a permissible gross weight from 750 to 3,500 kilograms, tipping trailers, slipway trailers and slipway assist trailers for boats up to yacht size. For trailers an insurance rule applies that many owners do not know: the trailer is included in our boat policy at no extra premium provided it is stated in the application.
At no extra premium does not mean automatically. Without an entry in the application the trailer is not part of the contract, and theft of the trailer together with the boat would only be covered up to the value of the boat. State the manufacturer, the payload and the chassis number; that costs nothing and closes a gap that runs into four figures in the event of a claim.
On the road the trailer remains a vehicle with its own obligations: registration, roadworthiness test, tyre age. The motor third-party liability of the towing vehicle covers the trailer in road traffic; our boat policy covers the trailer as an asset and the transport of the boat. These are two separate covers, and both are needed. Check the age of the tyres, because on trailers that mostly stand still, tyres age faster than they wear down.
