Dinghies and keel one-designs; cover, cost and conditions
The German dinghy and keelboat classes, Pirat, Zugvogel, O-Jolle, Korsar and the Kielzugvogel, form a fleet that ranges from pre-war wooden boats to current GRP hulls and is actively sailed on inland lakes and the Baltic. What they have in common is that they are classes with a measurement certificate: what may be altered on the boat is laid down.
For a repair, class conformity therefore counts. Hull damage must be repaired so that weight and shape stay within the class tolerance, otherwise the boat loses its eligibility to race, and with it a considerable part of its value. When reporting a claim, state that it is a class boat; we will then put you in touch with a yard that knows the rules.
For well kept examples the value of these boats is higher than the age suggests. The market is narrow, the classes are active, and a restored wooden hull carries the value of the work, not of the material. Have it established by a surveyor and set it as an agreed value; without it the figure would be written down by age, and the result would have nothing to do with the replacement value.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Does the repair have to conform to the class rules?
For boats requiring a measurement certificate, yes, otherwise the boat loses its eligibility to race. When reporting a claim, state that it is a class boat.
How do I establish the value of a wooden boat?
By a surveyor, as an agreed value. The value lies in the restoration work; a scale of values based on age would not match the replacement value.

Dinghies are mostly trailed and stored ashore, and that is where most damage happens: rigging, strapping down and winter storage.
