Kormoran Hausboote; cover, cost and conditions
Kormoran builds houseboats in Poland for the Masurian lakes and the inland waters of Central Europe, displacement craft of between nine and twelve metres with shallow draught, a high superstructure and an inboard engine. The high superstructure is the feature that matters for insurance: a houseboat has a large windage area and little draught, and that makes manoeuvring in wind difficult. On this type of construction, berthing damage is the most frequent hull claim.
Berthing and manoeuvring damage is covered by full hull cover, but not by limited hull cover. On a houseboat that is frequently under way in unfamiliar harbours and locks, that is the decisive difference between the levels. Reckon with the deductible: minor hull damage to the rubbing strake and the topsides occurs regularly, and a high deductible shifts precisely these cases onto you.
The second subject is use. Many Kormoran boats go into hire, and on the Masurian lakes that is an established market. Chartering is commercial use and is not included in the private policy. We do underwrite it, but we need it to be declared: a boat in the hands of changing hirers with no licence requirement is a different risk from your own weekend boat.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is berthing damage covered?
Under full hull cover yes, under limited hull cover no. On a houseboat with a high superstructure and little draught this is the most frequent kind of claim.
May I hire out my houseboat?
With declared commercial use yes. Undeclared, cover is entirely absent in a hire situation, including for damage caused by the hirer.

As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On a houseboat the interior counts. Water damage inside is the most common claim, well ahead of collision.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repairs are predictable. Still, set the value at replacement cost, including sails, rigging or gear you bought later.
The boat trailer runs free of charge inside your boat policy, it only has to be listed.
