Worth knowing
Latitude 46; cover, cost and conditions
Latitude 46 comes from France, the yard behind the Tofinou daysailers. Two ranges are recorded: Tofinou 8 / 9.5 since 1995 and Tofinou 12 / 16 since 2005, both of them continuing today, in lengths from 8 to 16 metres. The Tofinou yachts combine a classic appearance with modern construction. They are insured like any other sailing yacht, according to their data.
Daysailers spend part of the year ashore. The cover applies in winter storage, during craning, during launching and on the transport route. The limited hull cover also carries fire, storm, lightning strike, theft of the whole boat and damage in winter storage, and the full hull cover adds collision, grounding and vandalism.
The premium depends on type of boat, value, year of construction, sail area and cruising range, not on the name of the yard. The full hull cover works with an agreed value and pays compensation with no deduction for depreciation ("new for old"), in the Premium tariff without any age limit. Club races are included from Basis-Plus upwards.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
What happens if something goes wrong during craning?
The insurance cover applies during craning, during launching and on the transport route as well as in winter storage. You need no separate policy and no additional agreement for these stages.
Is a Tofinou 16 rated differently from a Tofinou 8?
Yes, because value, year of construction, sail area and cruising range enter into the premium. At lengths of eight to sixteen metres these details turn out differently. The brand itself has no effect.

Series by Latitude 46, with value and cover
Tofinou 8 / 9.5 is a sailing boat from Latitude 46 (France), built since 1995, and today changes hands at between €120,000 and €290,000.
Tofinou 12 / 16 is a sailing yacht from Latitude 46 (France), built since 2005, and today changes hands at between €420,000 and €1,200,000.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides. A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
