The Pénichette is the classic canal cruiser of the French inland waterways, a flat displacement boat in the style of a scaled-down péniche, originally built for the charter fleets of Locaboat and Le Boat and today found in large numbers as an owner's boat on the second-hand market. Anyone taking over a Pénichette is insuring a former charter boat with a high number of operating hours: the value belongs in a surveyor's report, not taken from a list.
Canal cruising has a damage pattern of its own. Locks are the main source: hull damage along the topsides, damaged rubbing strakes, bent guard rails. This damage is covered under full hull cover, not under limited hull cover, and it occurs so regularly that the choice of deductible decides here whether the policy makes economic sense. On a boat that passes through dozens of locks every season, a low deductible is sensible.
For the cruising range the EU inland level is sufficient, covering rivers and canals within Europe. Pay attention to the vignette and usage obligations of the waterway authorities, in France the VNF fee, in the Netherlands the vignet. These charges are not an insurance matter, but without them the passage is not permitted, and an unpermitted passage can become an issue in the event of a claim.
