Lettmann has been building kayaks by hand in Nettetal for decades; Biskaya and Nordkapp are sea kayaks made of fibre composite, built for coastal trips and for trips in exposed waters. Handwork and fibre composite mean a higher value than with production plastic boats, and therefore the question of a correctly calculated sum insured.
With a composite kayak the repair question is different from plastic. A crack in the laminate is properly filled and laminated over, which works in practically every case but costs working time at a specialist yard. With the same damage a plastic kayak would possibly be a total loss, whereas a composite boat can be repaired. That increases the value of hull insurance: the repair case occurs more often than the total loss.
For trips in exposed waters, the North Sea, the Atlantic coast, Scandinavia, the cruising range is the point to check. The North Sea/Baltic Sea level covers the Kattegat and the Skagerrak as well; for the European Atlantic coast the next level up is required. It costs little and is decisive for a tour.
