Worth knowing
Linssen Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Linssen from Maasbracht builds steel displacement boats for inland waters; Grand Sturdy and Range Cruiser are at home on Dutch canals, the Rhine, the Moselle and the waters of Brandenburg. In insurance terms steel is a case of its own: more robust against impact, but with corrosion as a permanent issue.
With steel hulls the state of maintenance counts for more than the year of construction. A well maintained thirty-year-old is a better risk than a neglected ten-year-old. Have wall thickness measurements and anode replacements documented; corrosion through wear is not covered by any hull insurance, whereas water ingress after an incident certainly is. For the valuation the agreed value is the right way, because Linssen yachts hold their value and a value scale based on age would be markedly too low.
On canals and in locks the typical damage is not the storm but the contact: lock wall, bollard, a leisure boat in a crosswind. All of them cases for full hull cover. Bridge clearance also matters; hitting a bridge that is too low is an accident and is covered under full hull cover, but the trouble can be avoided with a glance at the waterway chart.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
How is a steel hull valued?
By the state of maintenance, not only by the year of construction. Wall thickness measurements and documented anode replacements help, because corrosion through wear is not covered by any hull insurance.
Is damage in a lock insured?
Under full hull cover yes, as damage caused by an accident, including impact against the lock wall and bollards. Limited hull cover does not cover this.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
