Locaboat operates the largest Pénichette fleet on the European inland waterways, and its decommissioned boats make up a considerable part of the second-hand market for canal cruisers. Anyone taking over an ex-Locaboat buys a boat with a documented maintenance history, but also with a high number of operating hours and lock marks, and the value should be established by a surveyor.
For canal cruising the following applies: damage in locks is the most frequent hull claim. Hull damage to the topsides, damaged rubbing strakes, bent railings, all covered under full hull cover, not under limited hull cover. On a boat that passes dozens of locks every season, the deductible decides the economic benefit of the policy. Choose it low.
The propulsion on these boats is a low-revving displacement diesel with a long service life, often with many thousands of operating hours. Engine damage from wear is not covered; what is covered is damage through water ingress, fire or grounding. Have a compression test carried out when you take the boat over, it costs little and says more about the engine than the number of hours.
