Worth knowing
MacGregor Yacht Corporation; cover, cost and conditions
The MacGregor 26 is a special case: a trailerable sailing boat with water ballast that planes with fifty or sixty hp on the transom. In insurance terms it is therefore both a sailing boat and a motor boat, and the engine output helps determine the premium. State the outboard actually fitted, not the yard's figure; the range between five and sixty hp is wide.
The water ballast is the second point. Anyone who planes with the ballast filled or sails with the tank empty is operating outside what the designer intended. If the boat capsizes in the process, the question of due care quickly arises. The owner's manual here is not a piece of paper for the drawer.
Trailering is part of how a MacGregor is used. Road transport, launching and craning are included in our cover, and the trailer is covered at no extra premium if its value is stated in the contract. If you travel to Croatia or Italy on holiday you need the international certificate of insurance; with us it is automatically available in the customer account, in ten languages.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is the MacGregor 26 a sailing boat or a motor boat?
For us it is a motor sailer. The cover includes both; for calculating the premium the output of the outboard counts alongside the sail area.
Do I need a licence for the MacGregor?
Not under sail, but yes with an outboard of 15 hp or more. On the motorised 26 X and 26 M the recreational boating licence is therefore the rule.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides. A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
