In New Zealand, Manta5 builds the Hydrofoiler, a water bike on foils that runs on pedal power with electric assistance. In legal terms this is a borderline case: the propulsion is predominantly muscle powered, and the electric assistance stays below the power thresholds for registration and a licence. In practice this means: no registration requirement, no licence, but also nothing to be taken for granted in terms of cover.

For hull insurance, the foils and the drive train are the relevant components. The foils are made of carbon, are highly loaded and are damaged immediately on grounding; the drive with chain and gearbox in the water needs a fresh water rinse after every trip in salt water. A neglected rinse leads to corrosion damage, and that is a consequence of maintenance, not an insured event. Covered are collision, grounding, theft, fire and storm damage.
