Worth knowing
Nord Star; cover, cost and conditions
Nord Star from Finland builds pilothouse boats for rough weather, with enclosed wheelhouses and powerful engines, designed for the Baltic Sea and the Scandinavian coast. Anyone who runs a boat of this type is usually out on the water all year round, and that shapes the contract.
Year-round use is the point at which a seasonal policy falls short. Cover from 1 April to 31 October lowers the premium but leaves open precisely those months in which storm damage occurs at the berth. Anyone who goes out in winter or leaves the boat in the water needs all-year cover, and the extra cost is lower than a single storm loss.
On boats with twin engines, both engines belong in the contract with their power output and serial number. For the Baltic Sea the cruising range European coasts is generally sufficient; anyone sailing to Norway or into the Swedish archipelagos should have the area checked. Grounding in the archipelago is the classic loss, covered only under full hull cover.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is a seasonal policy worthwhile for a pilothouse boat?
Usually not. It covers from 1 April to 31 October and leaves the storm months open; for a boat that is used all year round or lies in the water, all-year cover is the right choice.
Does my contract cover the Swedish archipelagos?
With the cruising range European coasts, generally yes. You should have it checked before the trip, because a cruising range cannot be extended retroactively.

As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
