Pioner Boats; cover, cost and conditions
Pioner builds unsinkable boats in Norway from rotationally moulded polyethylene, three to five metres long, maintenance free and insensitive to impact, widely used as a tender, a fishing boat and a club boat. The construction is the reason these boats are bought: they do not sink, they need no antifouling coat, and they survive treatment that would break a glass fibre reinforced plastic hull.
For the insurance this means that the classic hull claims are rare. What remains is theft, since a Pioner is light, stackable and quickly loaded, along with engine theft and storm damage while lying moored. Full hull cover includes both. With a boat value in the four figure range it is worthwhile above all when an outboard worth several thousand euros is attached.
With polyethylene the repair question is the same as with all rotationally moulded hulls: a crack is welded, not laminated, and that does not always hold permanently. Major hull damage is therefore more often a constructive total loss than with glass fibre reinforced plastic. Set the sum insured according to the real replacement value, then the position is clear when a claim arises.
