Worth knowing
Ryds Båtindustri; cover, cost and conditions
Since the sixties Ryds has been building GRP boats between 4.5 and 6.5 metres in Sweden and is omnipresent on Swedish lakes and along the east coast. The boats are simply built and durable, and many are still sailing at forty years old. With boats of this age the current market value is practically zero, while their practical value is high. Without an agreed value, hull insurance pays almost nothing in the event of a total loss; with an agreed value it pays the recorded amount.
The second point with old Swedish production boats: the onboard electrical system. Forty-year-old wiring looms with retrofitted consumers are the most common cause of fire on recreational boats of all. Fire is already covered by limited hull cover, but the more effective measure is an inspection of the electrical system by a specialist firm, especially if an echo sounder, a cool box and a charger have been added over the years.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
How do I sensibly insure a forty-year-old boat?
With an agreed value based on a realistic replacement value. Without an agreed value the compensation follows the current market value, and at this age that is close to zero even though the boat is fully usable.
The cover that fits
For the whole class of boat
What matters for motorboats and sports boats is the same across every brand; engine output, how a claim is settled, cruising range and theft protection. The class page lists every point and every brand in this class.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
