Sea-Doo (BRP); cover, cost and conditions
Sea-Doo is the watersports brand of Bombardier Recreational Products from Valcourt in Québec and one of the best-known jet ski brands in Germany. The range is enormous: the Spark weighs less than 200 kilograms and makes do with 60 hp, while the RXP-X 325 delivers more than five times as much. For the premium it is the power that counts, not the purchase price, so there are worlds between a Spark and an RXP-X even though both carry the same registration mark.
The model ranges differ not only in horsepower but in intended use, and that is relevant for insurance. The Spark is a leisure craft for the lake. GTI and GTX are touring craft that are also ridden by two or three people, and there the occupant accident cover for the passenger matters. RXP-X and RXT-X are sports craft on which races are actually run, and the Explorer Pro is a tourer for longer distances with luggage, where the equipment belongs in the sum insured.
For jet skis, regardless of brand, one thing applies: private personal liability insurance does not cover them. Personal watercraft are excluded from private personal liability contracts, and not every insurer underwrites them at all. We have been underwriting jet skis since 2005, with third-party liability from 99 euros a year. In hull insurance we do not require an immobiliser and we have no night clause, two restrictions on which contracts regularly fail in the event of theft.
For the RXP-X and RXT-X, race cover is the real issue. With us, racing and training can be included as a module; with the five competitors whose terms we reviewed as at 1 July 2026 this was not possible. Anyone taking part in an event should clarify this beforehand; without the module the cover ends at the starting line.
Two things are asked about particularly often with Sea-Doo. First, the iBR reverse function: it is a braking aid, not a braking system. Anyone relying on it underestimates the stopping distance; a jet ski has no brakes, only water resistance. Second, the water intake: in shallow water the jet draws in sand, and the resulting damage is not grounding damage but drive damage with its own question of cause. Neither appears in any brochure.
Practical points for the policy: pontoon, lift and trailer can be co-insured, and from Basis-Plus the trailer is included in the third-party liability at no extra premium, even when uncoupled. For a permanently installed tracker there is a ten percent discount on the hull insurance. And bear the waters in mind: on many German inland lakes and on almost all Austrian lakes riding a jet ski is prohibited, regardless of what the policy says.

Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Does my private personal liability insurance cover the Sea-Doo?
No. Personal watercraft are excluded from private personal liability contracts. Without your own policy you are liable with your private assets; third-party liability starts at around 99 euros a year.
Is theft covered without an immobiliser?
Yes. We do not require an immobiliser in any tariff. Only the night clause depends on the tariff: in Premium it does not apply, in Basis and Basis-Plus it does. For a permanently installed tracker there is a ten percent discount on the hull insurance.
Are races with the RXP-X insured?
Yes with the racing and training module, including the practice runs. Without it the cover ends at the starting line.
What applies to the passenger on the GTI and GTX?
The occupant accident cover applies to all authorised persons on board and pays regardless of the question of fault, including after a handling error with no third-party blame, where third-party liability does not apply.
Is damage caused by ingested sand insured?
That depends on the cause. Drive damage caused by a foreign body is assessed differently from a grounding; report it before you continue riding.
Does the trailer count separately?
No. From Basis-Plus it is included in the third-party liability at no extra premium, even when uncoupled. State its value in the application.

Licence
A powerboat licence is required on almost every water.
Registration
Registration from 3 hp; an official number or boat certificate is required.
Waters
In many places only on designated areas; forbidden on Lake Constance and Bavarian waters.
Equipment
Lifejacket, kill switch with lanyard, helmet when racing; check the kill cord before every run.
Cruising range
Up to 2 nm off the coast is advisable; proof of insurance is compulsory in Croatia, Italy and Spain.
Weather
From Beaufort 4 it gets demanding; wind against current builds a steep, short sea.
General guidance, not a complete account; what governs are the rules of the waters you are on and your boat’s manual. Current wind force and direction for your waters are shown on the Home.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On a jet ski theft cover and engine output matter. We write them with and without an immobiliser and with no age limit on the craft.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
