Sea Star and Sunny are brands for affordable GRP boats of German-Polish manufacture, mostly between 4 and 6 metres and designed for outboards. They are entry-level boats for inland lakes, often the first boat someone buys. With exactly these boats the most common misconception is that the boat registration replaces the insurance. It does not: third-party liability is a separate agreement, and on many waters it is a requirement for a berth.

For a start the calculation is simple: third-party liability from around 49 euros a year covers damage to others. Limited hull cover is added for fire, storm, lightning, theft of the whole boat and transport damage and costs little at a boat value of around 15,000 euros. Full hull cover adds collision, grounding, vandalism and theft of parts, and with the outboard, which accounts for half of the value on these boats, that is the point at which it pays off.
