Sunova builds SUP boards in Thailand with balsa cores in its own sandwich construction, Casta and Flow as all-water boards, Faast as a race board, Aviator for downwind. The construction combines light weight with impact resistance and sits in the upper price bracket, with values in the four-figure range.
The balsa core construction can be repaired, and that is the advantage in insurance terms: a ding or crack can be properly sealed without the board being a total loss. With a value in the four-figure range hull insurance is worthwhile accordingly, as repair is the likely case. What matters is prompt repair: an open ding lets water into the core, and the resulting damage is considerably more expensive than the original damage.
This is precisely the point that decides cover. A ding from a single event is covered; a soaked core because a ding was left open for months is the consequence of failure to carry out repairs. Report damage promptly and have it sealed. For trips outside Europe you need the worldwide cruising range level; we do not offer boat third-party liability for muscle-powered craft.
