Topper und Topaz; cover, cost and conditions
Topper builds plastic dinghies in England for training and youth sailing. The Topper itself is a rotationally moulded single-handed dinghy that has been sailing in sailing schools and clubs since the seventies, and the Topaz range covers youth and family boats. Rotationally moulded plastic is the difference that matters for insurance: these hulls are practically indestructible in normal use, but hard to repair if something does break.
A crack in a rotationally moulded hull cannot be laminated like GRP, it is welded, and that does not always hold permanently. In practice, major hull damage on these boats leads to an economic total loss more often than on a GRP boat of the same value. Set the sum insured according to the real replacement value; on a used Topper that is a low four-figure amount.
School and club operation is the issue here too. Topper fleets stand in sailing schools and are sailed by beginners, which is commercial or club use and has to be declared. For private owners the third-party liability is the more important part: even a small dinghy can cause personal injury in a busy area, and the amount does not depend on the value of the boat.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Can a plastic hull be repaired?
Only by welding, and not always permanently. Major hull damage on these boats leads to an economic total loss more often than with GRP.
What do I need for a school fleet?
Registration as school or club use, with the number of boats. Beginners as users are a different risk from use by the owner.

Dinghies are mostly trailed and stored ashore, and that is where most damage happens: rigging, strapping down and winter storage.
