Worth knowing
Van de Stadt; cover, cost and conditions
A design office from the Netherlands whose drawings were used both for series production and for home building. Many yachts sail to a Van de Stadt design under another name, which makes classification in the application more difficult. This is irrelevant for insurability, because we accept small series and home-built boats.
Our portfolio includes a Norman 40 and a Pionier 10. The designs 34 and 40 were built from 1960 to 2010, the Norman 30 and the Excalibur from 1965 to 1990. For hulls from such periods the value is set as an agreed value and is replaced in the event of a claim with no deduction for depreciation (new for old).
Sailing yachts from eight to fourteen metres enter the rating with sail area, value, year of construction and cruising range. Third-party liability with a limit of indemnity of 10 to 50 million euros forms the basis, and in the Premium tariff the age limit in full hull cover does not apply. Club races are included from Basis-Plus.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
How is a home-built boat to someone else's design entered in the application?
What matters is the type of boat, value, year of construction, sail area and cruising range. Small series and home-built boats can be insured, even if the yacht sails under a name other than that of the designer.
Does the insurance help in a dispute with a yard about the fit-out?
For disputes after buying a used boat or with a yard we offer legal expenses cover for watersports. It supplements third-party liability and hull insurance and is taken out in addition.

Series by Van de Stadt, with value and cover
Van de Stadt 34 / 40 (Riss) is a sailing yacht from Van de Stadt (the Netherlands), built from 1960 to 2010, and today changes hands at between €25,000 and €110,000.
Norman 30 / Excalibur is a sailing boat from Van de Stadt (the Netherlands), built from 1965 to 1990, and today changes hands at between €10,000 and €32,000.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides. A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
