VEB Yachtwerft Berlin built until 1990 the boats that still lie everywhere on the waters of Brandenburg and Mecklenburg today, the Ixylon as a dinghy, the Neptun 22 and 24 as keelboats, plus the Pirat and the O-Jolle in the GDR version. These boats are well built, durable and have an active scene; insuring them, however, has two particular features.
The first is the question of spare parts. Fittings, masts and special parts from GDR production are no longer available, and a repair means searching the second-hand market or having parts made. That extends downtime and makes repairs more expensive than the value of the boat would suggest. On an Ixylon a broken mast can amount economically to a total loss, so set the sum insured according to the real replacement value, not according to the purchase price.
The second is establishing the value. The market for well-kept GDR boats is small but stable, and an elaborately restored Neptun can be worth considerably more than a comparable production boat costs. Have the value established by an expert and record it as an agreed value. Without it the calculation is based on age, and with a boat from 1975 that leads to an amount that makes any repair impossible.
