Vetus; cover, cost and conditions
Vetus is not a boatbuilder but the Dutch equipment supplier whose bow thrusters, drives and system technology are fitted in boats of every brand, right through to the E-Line electric drives for conversions. For insurance purposes Vetus is therefore usually not a question of the brand but one of retrofitting: anyone upgrading a boat with Vetus technology increases its value and must report this.
A retrofitted electric drive is the clearest case. Converting from diesel to E-Line fundamentally changes the propulsion, the battery bank and the electrical system, costs a five-figure sum and must appear in the contract, both for the value and for the risk assessment. An unreported conversion of the propulsion is an increase in risk that can lead to a reduction of benefits in the event of a claim.
With the battery bank the topic of charging is added. Large lithium banks in a boat hull are safe if they are installed professionally and charged as specified. Our hull insurance covers fire and thermal runaway including consequential damage, but requires professional installation by a qualified business. Keep the installer's invoice, in the event of a claim it is the evidence that counts.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Do I have to report a conversion of the propulsion?
Yes, absolutely. A conversion from diesel to electric changes value and risk; if unreported it counts as an increase in risk and can reduce the benefits.
Is a retrofitted lithium battery bank covered?
With professional installation yes, including fire and thermal runaway. The invoice from the installation business is the evidence that counts in the event of a claim.

Series by Vetus, with value and cover
Vetus Maxwell Ankerwinden und Zubehör is an electric boat from Vetus, built since 2010, and today changes hands at between €1,000 and €9,000.
Vetus E-Line Elektroantriebe is an electric boat from Vetus, built since 2015, and today changes hands at between €5,000 and €25,000.
Vetus Bugstrahl- und Antriebstechnik is an electric boat from Vetus, built since 1990, and today changes hands at between €2,000 and €15,000.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On an electric boat the battery is the largest single item. It belongs in the sum insured, otherwise the most expensive part is missing in a total loss.
