Worth knowing
Vision Marine Technologies; cover, cost and conditions
Vision Marine from Canada builds electric boats and, with E-Motion, also supplies propulsion systems to other shipyards, while Fantail and Volt are compact leisure boats for lakes and sheltered waters. For European owners these boats are mostly imports, which means the question of value comes before the question of cover.
With an import the replacement value results from the purchase price, transport, import duties and European CE certification. It is regularly well above the purchase price in the country of origin. State it in full, otherwise you are underinsured in the event of a total loss and your payment is reduced proportionally. The sea transport itself is not automatically covered by our policy, and we include sea transports on request.
With the supply of spare parts the origin is the practical point. A North American manufacturer without a European service network means waiting time and shipping costs from Canada in the event of a claim. That does not increase the premium, but it does extend the downtime, so allow for it and check whether your contract needs a loss-of-use provision.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
What value do I state for an import?
The full replacement value in Europe: purchase price, transport, import duties, CE certification. The purchase price alone leads to underinsurance.
Is sea transport covered?
Not automatically, and we include sea transports on request. Clarify this before shipping.

As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On an electric boat the battery is the largest single item. It belongs in the sum insured, otherwise the most expensive part is missing in a total loss.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
