Zugvogel; cover, cost and conditions
The Zugvogel is a German design from 1937 and exists as a dinghy and as the Kielzugvogel with a fixed keel, both still actively sailed on inland lakes and the Baltic, with a fleet of wooden and glass fibre boats. In insurance terms the Kielzugvogel is the more interesting variant, because with its fixed keel it counts as a keelboat and more often stays in the water.
A keelboat at its berth has different risks from a dinghy ashore: water ingress, fouling, storm damage at the berth, theft of fittings and electronics. All of this is covered by hull insurance, water ingress however only if it does not go back to a lack of maintenance. On a boat whose design roots are more than eighty years old, the condition of the through-hull fittings and the seacocks is the point a surveyor looks at first.
For the value, the same applies to these classics as to all others: have it established by a surveyor and record it as an agreed value. The market for well-kept Zugvogel boats is narrow, prices hold up, and a scale of values by age would lead in a claim to an amount that has nothing to do with the replacement value.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
What should I look out for on a Kielzugvogel?
At the through-hull fittings and the seacocks; on a boat that lies in the water they are the critical point. Water ingress from a lack of maintenance is not covered.
Is hull insurance worthwhile on an old Zugvogel?
On well-kept boats yes, because the market value remains high. Have it established by a surveyor as an agreed value.

Series by Zugvogel, with value and cover
Zugvogel racing is a sailing dinghy from Zugvogel, built from 1980 to 2015, and today changes hands at between €5,000 and €16,000.
Zugvogel wooden build is a sailing dinghy from Zugvogel, built from 1937 to 1990, and today changes hands at between €1,000 and €7,000.
Zugvogel GRP build is a sailing dinghy from Zugvogel, built from 1970 to 2020, and today changes hands at between €3,000 and €12,000.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
Dinghies are mostly trailed and stored ashore, and that is where most damage happens: rigging, strapping down and winter storage.
For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
