Fountaine Pajot; cover, cost and conditions
Fountaine Pajot of La Rochelle builds sailing and power catamarans and is, alongside Lagoon, the second large French manufacturer. The yachts are designed for long distances, and many owners sail an Atlantic crossing and a Caribbean season, which sets the policy apart from that of a purely Mediterranean catamaran.
Two things matter with Fountaine Pajot catamarans. First the value: insured by length, a catamaran is underinsured, because two drive trains, two steering systems and twice the number of components count in the event of a claim. Second the cruising range: for the Caribbean season you need a worldwide cruising range without hurricane exclusion clauses, and that is exactly where standard policies fail when it matters.
With the power cats of the MY range the propulsion question is added. Two drive trains mean twice the risk of grounding and of rope in the propeller, and only the full hull cover as an all-risks cover bears both. The limited hull cover knows fire, storm and theft, but not grounding. On a catamaran of this class that is no place to save money.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Does the policy cover an Atlantic crossing?
With our blue water cover yes, worldwide cruising range with no time limit, berth outside Europe possible, no hurricane exclusion clauses. Agree it before you depart.
How is a catamaran valued correctly?
Via the replacement value including both drive trains and the electronics, recorded as an agreed value. A valuation by length regularly leads to underinsurance.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part, and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
