Worth knowing
Garcia Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
In France, Garcia builds aluminium blue-water yachts between 13 and 18 metres, Exploration models with a lifting keel, a reinforced hull and an enclosed inside steering position, built for high latitudes. They are expedition yachts under sail, and they are bought for Greenland, Spitsbergen and the Northwest Passage.
That is exactly where the point relevant to insurance lies: navigation in ice is not included across the board. The Worldwide cruising range applies without restriction, but navigation in ice areas is a risk of its own and requires an express agreement. Anyone planning a voyage to high latitudes should talk to us beforehand; ice reinforcement of the hull, equipment, crew experience and salvage cover then have to be clarified individually.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is navigation in ice areas insured?
Not across the board, navigation in ice requires an express agreement. Discuss a voyage to high latitudes with us beforehand, not afterwards.

Series by Garcia, with value and cover
Garcia 60 / 65 is a sailing yacht from Garcia (France), built since 2016, and today changes hands at between €1,200,000 and €2,600,000.
Passoa / Nouanni (classic) is a sailing yacht from Garcia (France), built from 1990 to 2012, and today changes hands at between €180,000 and €490,000.
Exploration 45 / 52 is a sailing yacht from Garcia (France), built since 2010, and today changes hands at between €520,000 and €1,600,000.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
