Worth knowing
J/Boats; cover, cost and conditions
J/Boats builds racing and performance yachts between 7 and 15 metres in the USA and through licensees in Europe, the J/70 and J/80 as one-design classes with large fleets, the larger models as fast cruising yachts. For J-Boat owners the racing question is the central one: these boats are bought in order to sail races.
Racing use is not automatically covered and requires an express agreement. The typical competition damage is contact at the course mark or with another boat at the start, hull damage in the bow and side areas, plus rig damage. Both are covered with racing cover included. Anyone sailing a one-design class should also reflect the sail wardrobe in the sum insured: on these boats it represents a considerable value.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Are contacts at the start of a race covered?
With racing cover included, yes, both the damage to your own boat under hull insurance and the damage to the other boat through third-party liability. Without that inclusion the cover does not apply in competition.

Licence
Under sail no licence is needed; with an auxiliary engine from 15 hp one is.

Official number or boat certificate; a flag document for trips abroad.
Waters
Inland lakes, the Baltic and the North Sea; tide, current and shoals belong in the passage plan.
Equipment
Lifejackets, harness and jackstays, lifebuoy, distress signals, reefing system.
Cruising range
Certificate of insurance for foreign harbours; check that racing is covered.
Weather
Reef in time: first reef from Beaufort 5, second from 6, watch the gust forecast.
General guidance, not a complete account; what governs are the rules of the waters you are on and your boat’s manual. Current wind force and direction for your waters are shown on the Home.
Series by J/Boats, with value and cover
J/70 / J/80 is a sailing boat from J/Boats, built since 1993, and today changes hands at between €25,000 and €75,000.
J/99 / J/112E is a sailing yacht from J/Boats, built since 2015, and today changes hands at between €190,000 and €420,000.
J/122 / J/45 is a sailing yacht from J/Boats, built since 2007, and today changes hands at between €290,000 and €780,000.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides. A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
