Worth knowing
Quicksilver; cover, cost and conditions
Quicksilver is the European volume brand of the Brunswick group and builds boats between four and eight metres, almost all of them with an outboard. The Activ and Captur ranges are widespread on the lakes of Brandenburg, on the Baltic and in the Netherlands, as a first boat, a fishing boat and a family boat alike.
Because Quicksilver boats depend on the outboard, the engine is the most important entry in the contract. It has to be recorded by name with its power and serial number, otherwise the hull insurance covers only the hull in a theft. Outboard theft is the most frequent type of loss in this class of boat in coastal harbours and at unattended jetties. For a fitted GPS or Bluetooth tracker we grant a ten per cent discount on the hull insurance.
With outboards the premium is based on the engine power, not on the length of the boat. Anyone fitting a more powerful engine has to report it: a boat with 60 hp that is run with 115 hp is a different contract, and a problem in a claim. Reporting it takes two minutes and changes the premium less than most people expect.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
What is the premium based on for a Quicksilver with an outboard?
On the engine power. Third-party liability starts at around 49 euros a year; what counts is hp or kW, the cruising range and the value of the boat.
What happens if I fit a more powerful engine?
Report it before the first trip. More power than agreed can cost you the benefit in a claim, while the change to the contract itself is straightforward.

For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
On a fishing boat the gear is often worth more than expected: sounder, trolling motor and rods are covered as equipment if they are listed.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
