My boat is a home build to an RFK plan. How is the value set?

Through an agreed fixed value. The basis is a survey or a traceable record of build costs with invoices and photographs. That way the sum insured is settled in advance and does not have to be reconstructed after a loss.

What do codes such as RFK-MB or RFK-FS mean?

They describe the type of the plan: MB for motorboat, FS and CB for sailing boats, MK for cabin cruiser, FW for touring boats. The number after it gives the length in metres, so an RFK-FS 9/030 is around 9 m long.

What this means for the cover

For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides. A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.

On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.

On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.

On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part, and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.

On a trimaran the floats and their beams are the weak point, on folding models the mechanism as well.
