Worth knowing
Carter Offshore Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions
Carter Offshore is listed with 22 models, mostly sailing yachts. The range included the Carter 30, 33, 35, 37, 39, 42 and 44, plus the Dora, the Luna, a three quarter tonner and the Carter 37 Express C. Build years run from 1968 to 2012, lengths from 7.3 to 15.4 m.
Dick Carter's designs come from the racing scene of the 1960s and 1970s, and many of these yachts are still sailed hard today. For insurance that means rig and sails carry more load than on pure cruisers, and a dismasting is the expensive claim. Comprehensive hull cover pays for it as long as it results from an event and not from an aged rig. Racing belongs explicitly in the policy.
NAMMERT insures Carter yachts regardless of build year and place of purchase. As these boats are classics by now, we recommend an agreed fixed value: on well kept yachts the value is above the table, and a rig or engine refit counts noticeably. You can calculate the premium for liability and hull cover in the online calculator in about 5 minutes.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is a dismasting on my Carter covered?
Under comprehensive hull cover yes, if it results from a sudden event. On yachts from the 1970s a rig inspection is worthwhile, because material fatigue on a rig that has never been overhauled is a wear case and not covered.
Does a club race already count as racing?
Yes, which is why it should be named in the policy. The cost of doing so is small, whereas the consequence of a missing agreement after a loss is considerable. Tell us the setting in which you sail.

For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides. A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
