Worth knowing
Peter Knief; cover, cost and conditions
Three ranges are on record: the Elb-H-Jolle, which has been built since 2013, the Nordwind 32 Knief with build years since 1990 and the Jugendwanderkutter from the years 1982 to 1992. Two ranges run up to the present day, one was discontinued in 1992. All three can be insured.
Small series and self-built boats can be insured with us. The basis is the third-party liability with a limit of indemnity of 10 to 50 million euros, supplemented by limited hull cover and full hull cover with an agreed value. Compensation is paid with no deduction for depreciation, in the Premium tariff without any age limit for the year of construction.
With sailing boats and sailing yachts the premium is based on the sail area instead of the engine power, together with the type of boat, the value, the year of construction and the cruising range. Club races are included from Basis-Plus, and the boat trailer is included in the boat insurance at no extra premium.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Can a one-off build or a small series be insured?
Yes. Small series and self-built boats can be insured. What counts for the contract are the details of the boat, that is the type of boat, the value, the year of construction, the sail area and the cruising range.
Is a boat from current production treated differently from one from 1985?
No. We insure regardless of the year of construction, the place of purchase and previous owners. In the full hull cover the agreed value applies, in the Premium tariff without any age limit.

Series by Peter Knief, build years and cover
Bootswerft Peter Knief Elb-H-dinghy is a sailing boat from Peter Knief, built since 2013.
Nordwind 32 Knief is a sailing yacht from Peter Knief, built since 1990.
Jugendwanderkutter is a sailing yacht from Peter Knief, built from 1982 to 1992.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides. A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
