Worth knowing
Peter Nicholls (Steel Boats); cover, cost and conditions
Three model ranges are on record: Huffler and Renegade 43 as sailing yachts from 1991 to 1998, plus the Leopard 32, which has been built as a sailing boat since 2018 and is still in production today. Between the oldest and the newest units there are therefore about three decades of difference in the year of construction.
What counts for the premium is the type of boat, value, year of construction, sail area and cruising range, never the brand. We insure regardless of year of construction, place of purchase and previous owners, including small series and home-built boats. Up to a sum insured of 2.5 million euros the policy is taken out online, above that we assess the individual case.
In full hull cover an agreed value fixes the value, indemnity is paid with no deduction for depreciation (new for old), in the Premium tariff with no age limit. This allows a yacht from 1991 and a boat from current production to be held to the same extent. Third-party liability ranges from 10 to 50 million euros.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Does the same extent apply to the Leopard 32 and the Huffler?
Yes. In the Premium tariff full hull cover applies with no age limit, so a yacht from 1991 and a boat from current production can receive the same extent of cover.
What determines the premium for a sailing yacht?
The type of boat, value, year of construction, sail area and cruising range. Engine output is not used for sailing yachts, and the name of the brand does not feed in either.

What matters for sailing boats and sailing yachts is the same across every brand; engine output, how a claim is settled, cruising range and theft protection. The class page lists every point and every brand in this class.

Series by Peter Nicholls (Steel Boats), build years and cover
Leopard 32 is a sailing boat from Peter Nicholls (Steel Boats), built since 2018.
Huffler is a sailing yacht from Peter Nicholls (Steel Boats), built from 1991 to 1998.
Renegade 43 is a sailing yacht from Peter Nicholls (Steel Boats), built from 1991 to 1998.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides. A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
