How the place works
Around four hundred ship movements a day at the narrowest point between the continent and England, plus the ferry traffic across it. The separation scheme is monitored, and a crossing is watched by the coastguard station: anyone not crossing at right angles gets called.
What breaks there
The expensive case is not the contact but the forced manoeuvre of a commercial vessel and everything that follows. Add nets and debris, and engine failure in the separation zone, which turns a passage into an emergency.
What this means for your policy
Two things: the liability limit, and whether the policy covers crossing the Channel at all or the cruising range stops at the coast. Both belong before departure, not in the middle of the passage.
