The tidal range is among the largest in Europe, and at springs up to nine knots run in the Alderney Race. With wind against tide a steep, breaking sea builds there that has nothing to do with the reported wind strength. The window for the passage is narrow and fixed.
What breaks there
Enter at the wrong hour and you cannot get out again: the boat stands still or is set backwards, and the slamming into the cross sea costs fittings, steering gear and electronics. Groundings happen when moving to the edge to give way.
