How the place works
The narrows between Siberia and Alaska are shallow and tight, and sea ice sits there for a large part of the year. The window for a passage is a few weeks in late summer, and it shifts from year to year.
What breaks there
Ice contact at the waterline is one thing; the other is distance: hundreds of miles lie between harbours, and salvage in this region is hardly arrangeable.
What this means for your policy
The Northwest and Northeast Passages are excluded from standard policies. Anyone planning them needs a special agreement, and that usually still excludes ice contact. Expect to carry the ice risk yourself.
