How the place works
The lake lies right in front of the mountains, and thunderstorm gusts come from the south over the ridge without being visible early from the water. Between the first signs and the full gust there are often less than ten minutes, and the lake is some fifteen kilometres across at its widest.
What breaks there
Dinghies, engineless sailing boats and open boats are the ones affected: capsizes, flooding, dismasting. Add mooring buoys where boats drift into each other in a southerly.
What this means for your policy
The Bavarian navigation rules use flashing storm warning lights, and they are binding. Anyone staying out despite the warning will be arguing about the duty in a claim. Also check whether salvage by diver and crane is insured at a sufficient level.
