How the place works
Both lakes are long and narrow and run north to south. The wind is channelled along them and stands on the water over their full length, so at the southern end a short, high sea builds even in moderate wind. Lake Starnberg is also very deep.
What breaks there
Capsizes and flooding in small boats, plus damage at pontoons and mooring buoys. The depth makes every case more expensive: a sunken boat has to be rigged by divers and lifted by crane, whatever it is worth.
What this means for your policy
Make sure salvage and lifting costs are insured separately and at a sufficient level. For a small boat in eighty metres of water they regularly exceed the boat's market value.
