How the place works

Here the North Sea and the Baltic meet with different salinity and opposing currents, and the depth falls off sharply from the Skagerrak into the Kattegat. In a westerly gale the North Sea swell runs up, turns short and steep, and in the Kattegat the traffic through the belts is added.

What breaks there

The delivery from the North Sea into the Baltic is the typical case: several days of sustained loading, then damage to rig, fittings and steering gear. Anyone sailing in autumn collects it almost on schedule.

What this means for your policy

Check whether your cruising range includes the North Sea or stops at the Baltic: for many policies Skagen is the boundary. Passing it without an extension means leaving the insured area mid-passage.
