How the place works
A substantial share of the world's oil transport runs through the narrows, and traffic is correspondingly dense and militarily monitored. The separation schemes are tight, and the political situation in the region directly affects the safety of the passage.
What breaks there
For yachts the traffic is one thing, the authorities another: being hailed, inspected and facing short notice closures is routine here, not an exception. Material damage arises when giving way and when anchoring in unapproved areas.
