Bay of Islands
Opua and Whangarei lie far enough south to be outside the tropical cyclone belt and are therefore the standard winter harbour for yachts from the South Pacific. The area itself is sheltered and pleasant; the approach across the Tasman Sea is not, with strong depressions passing through in spring.

Berths, season and winter storage
Time on site is typically November to April, the southern summer, with berths in the middle price band. Yards and suppliers are very good and many owners use the time for refits. Entry requirements for boats are strict, above all on hull fouling.
