How the place works
Between Australia and New Zealand lie some twelve hundred miles of open sea, and from May to September the lows pass from west to east at short intervals. The passage is the return from the South Pacific and is sailed between two systems.
What breaks there
Sustained loading over several days: rig, fittings, steering gear, autopilot. Anyone who misses the window has nowhere to divert, because there is nothing between the two coasts.
