How the place works

Off the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal, dozens of ships lie at anchor waiting for their slot. Pilot boats, tugs and the traffic out of Panama City run between them, and the tidal range in the gulf is several metres.

What breaks there

Yachts crossing the anchorage end up between anchored and manoeuvring ships, and anchoring near the roads is not a good idea. Add nets and unlit fishing marks.

What this means for your policy

For the canal transit itself the authority requires its own paperwork, and many policies treat the transit as an event of its own. Settle whether damage in the canal, for example against the lock walls, is covered and whether line handlers are insured.
