How the place works

The Spree, the Landwehr Canal and the Havel are federal waterways in the middle of a major city: passenger boats every few minutes, freight traffic, rowers, canoes and licence-free charter boats on the same water. Add narrow bridge passages with restricted sight lines and a current that picks up noticeably after rain.

What breaks there

The most common case is a collision while berthing or in a bridge passage, usually at the topsides and rubbing strake, often with a second boat. Add damage to other people's property: pontoons, passenger boats, bank revetments.

What this means for your policy

Here it almost always hits both sides, so hull cover on your own boat and liability on the other. Anyone carrying only liability pays for their own gelcoat. On licence-free charter it is also worth checking who counts as an authorised helmsman.
